There is another story that claims that if an apple is peeled in one continuous ribbon and thrown behind a woman's shoulder, it will land in the shape of her future husband's initials. Within Celtic mythology, there is a story about a boy name Conle who receives an apple which feeds him for a year, but consequently makes him irresistible in the desire of fairyland. If the woman did not catch it, he would have to propose to another woman and hope for the best. If she caught it, he would know she accepted his offer. In Greece, any man who wanted to propose to a woman would have to toss her an apple. Atlanta, another Grecian, was distracted during a race by three golden apples that were thrown for that purpose by a suitor, Hippomenes. Another Greek mythological figure by the name of Paris had to give a golden apple (which came from the goddess of discord, Eris) to the most beautiful goddess, which indirectly produced the Trojan War. ![]() Hercules, the Greek hero and son of Zeus, had to find the Hesperides' golden apples as one of his twelve labors. However, modern day Greek scholars believe that these "apples" were actually oranges or lemons. In the garden of Hesperides, golden apples were given to Hera as a wedding gift to her marriage to Zeus. There is a tale in Greek mythology that recounts how each of these symbolic signs became known to the apple. Throughout history, apples have been seen as a sign of luxury, pleasure, love, fertility, and jealousy. Do apples possess magical qualities? Or contain aphrodisiac powers? Probably not, but in early civilization, apples were thought very highly of as a source of wealth and containing magical qualities.
